Do Vitamin Gummies Work? And Why Are Liquids Better?

Gummies seem to be all the rage at the moment and while taking any supplement in a ‘lolly’ form is appealing (and convenient) - do vitamin gummies actually work?

When it comes to herbal medicine, the method of delivery significantly
influences how effectively the body absorbs and utilises the active ingredients. Gummies, liquids, powders, and pills each offer unique absorption characteristics. These characteristics can influence both the onset and effectiveness of the herbal supplement.

Here, we break down the pros and cons of gummies, powders, pills and liquids so you can decide which method of delivery is right for you.

Gummies

Gummies are a popular choice due to their taste and convenience. However, their absorption process is slower compared to other forms. This is because gummies must be chewed and broken down in the stomach before the active ingredients can be absorbed into your bloodstream. This means that the effects might take an hour or more to manifest. The gelatine or pectin base used in gummies can also slow down the release of the herbal components.

Another point to consider is that gummies require more additives, stabilisers and sweeteners, such as sugar or sugar alcohol, for palatability. Sugar alcohols, which can also be found in sugar-free confectionary, chocolate, and chewing gum, can lead to digestive issues in some individuals. The most commonly used sugar alcohols are sorbitol, maltitol, or xylitol. They can often cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including bloating, gas, and diarrhoea, especially when consumed in larger quantities.

Lastly, as there are more ingredients required to make a gummy it means the amount of the ‘active’ has to be reduced - making them less therapeutic than other options.

Powders

Herbal powders are versatile and can be mixed with water, juice, smoothies or added to certain foods. The absorption rate of powders is typically faster than gummies but slower than liquids. This is because the body needs to break down the powder before it can absorb the active ingredients. However, the absorption can be somewhat variable, depending on how finely the powder is ground, what format it is in and how well it is mixed with the liquid.

Pills

Pills (including tablets and capsules) are one of the most common forms of herbal supplements. Their absorption is generally slower than liquids and powders, as they must dissolve in the stomach before the herbal ingredients can be absorbed.

This slow absorption can lead to a more sustained release of the active compounds over time. However as a lot of people suffer from impaired digestion and gut health concerns, the ability to break down and utilise the active compounds from the pill can be greatly reduced - making it less therapeutic.

Pills are convenient for those who prefer a more travel-friendly option of supplementation and often have a longer shelf life due to additives and stabilisers.

Liquids

Liquid herbal supplements offer a faster absorption rate. Since they are already in liquid form, the active ingredients can be absorbed quickly through the mucous membranes in the mouth and stomach, leading to effects within 15-30 minutes. Liquids are ideal for situations where a rapid response is needed, such as for acute symptoms like anxiety or pain. They also allow for easier dose adjustments as the liquid can be measured more precisely - which is important with babies and children.

Liquids are often more affordable as you don’t need to consume as much as you do with other formats. For example, to get the same therapeutic dose of chamomile you could take 5ml of our Rest and Calm or 8 gummies.

Traditionally, herbal medicine was always found as a liquid; as teas, decoctions or as tinctures. It was the most readily available way of dispensing herbs as people had the most access to water and alcohol. Vinegar and honey was also used to preserve and dispense herbal formulas.

We have consciously chosen to make a liquid-only range as we believe it is the most effective and affordable way of taking plants. It allows flexibility within families or households as people can adjust to the dose they need, and it is quick and easy to take - making it a simple fit into busy days.

So, do vitamin gummies work?

The answer to that can be both yes and no. It depends on how many you can take and tolerate, and how your body can break things down. It also depends on the formula and the strength of the gummies. Although we are (obviously) biased, we believe liquids are the most effective and efficient way to take plants and supplements - especially if you are unwell!
