Spring is here- Skye's top tips


Spring is here - the flowers and lambs tell us so. In Dunedin the weather is a tad unpredictable (much like Spring in general) and sadly although we are on the other side of winter, the bugs are still around and immunity is still an area to concentrate on.

Here at Wild Dispensary we try and make our lives (and yours) as easy as possible so this is what we are doing to try and stop the bugs getting us (sounds dramatic but no-one NO-ONE wants to be sick on a sunny day)...

Immunity tonic on repeat. We LOVE this tonic. The kids in our lives have this every morning before school and pre school. In fact the big kids in the family have it before work too. Why? Well one - its tasty. Two - it is full of immune supporting herbs that help us get through this season. The main plant in our Immunity tonic is Elderberry - this plant is beautiful. Not only to look at - but also because of its massive active constituent content. Elderberry is anti viral, full of antioxidants and its use and benefits are backed up by science - you know if you need that for the sceptic in your family.

Probiotic rich foods

A large part of your immune system resides in your gut so any sort of dysfunction can have a flow on effect to your immunity. Pre and probiotic rich foods are key to helping your gut and gut function. Prebiotics are what the bacteria live on (so think fibre - chia seeds, psyillum husks, inulin) and probiotics are the bacteria that populate your gut - you can buy probiotics from your local health store or pharmacy. But you can also incorporate foods that help your gut function and immunity - stuff like:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Kimchi
  • Kombucha
  • Kefir
  • Miso
  • Yoghurt
  • Apple cider vinegar (like in our Switchel and Fire cider)

Start incorporating small amounts into your daily diet - don’t go crazy and add in heaps - that will overwhelm your stomach and you will feel not so great. So ¼ cup of kombucha etc a day.

Wash hands

Oh so simple but SO effective. Get the kids to wash their hands before any food, when they blow their nose (pick their nose…) when they get home, etc. Proper hand washing to the tune of happy birthday (the full song) is the best way. No sanitiser required.


Zinc is amazing for healing skin stuff. Immunity stuff hormonal stuff. So many of us are deficient in zinc, this can be from our soils being deficient in essential minerals as well as our diets, and also our stress levels. You can incorporate more zinc rich foods by eating:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Pumpkin seed butter or mylk
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils
  • Red Meat
  • Seafood
  • Seeds

Zinc powder can be a great thing to have in the cupboard for when you feel you are coming down with something - but always take zinc after food and never continuously take zinc. 


Sleep is the best thing ever. You need it to repair and recuperate from the day, so try and get to bed at a good time, with no distractions. Add a blue light filter to your phone for night use. You need sleep. Sorry parents (we know you know this…)
